• April 5th. Not a bad day for my first skate ski at BHP – if it’s still going to snow, I might as well ski! 95% of the track was white & firm, very good condition. A handful of short sections were showing damp & thin, but no bare spots to speak of. The classic tracks looked done. Forecast rain & temps will probably finish the skate track too after…[Read more]

What a pleasure to meet David and ski Shannondale! Only the main (green & yellow) trails in valley bottom were freshly groomed, but we skied all over and the old groom was fine. Conditions had more to do with sun than grooming – some slow and soft, some icy and fast, keeps you on your toes down the slopes! No bare spots. David has his eyes on…[Read more]

Skied Green trail mid-afternoon on 19th. Pretty good! Track was mostly well defined and clean. Snow was an expected mixed bag, mostly sqwunchy & slow. Biggest “problem” with the track is deer tracks, needles & debris weren’t a big issue here. Lots of snow, no sign of bare spots.

Trails were not freshly groomed this week, but were holding up quite well. Tracks were good, but in stretches there were a lot of needles and leaves. Still worth it though. Skate track did not look worth it (especially compared to Camp Morton, which was awesome).

  • Late season kudos to the Gimli XC Ski Club! Wasn’t really planning to ski today, but on our way home from Hecla, we pulled in to take a peak at the W side trails, never been there before – stove was on, cabin was neat, maps were there, the tracks were fresh & perfect, -3 and big flakes falling, so we couldn’t resist!! Tracks were mid-winter…[Read more]

Thanks for the ski yesterday Birch! Trails are in great shape – keep up the good work! The kids loved the hills! Beautiful area. Having the space in the chalet for kids to change, chill (bring a board game!), snack, etc., is really great for families! We’ll be joining as founding members to support “Birch is back”!

  • Skied Wild Grape and Elm (the main loop) and Basswood (across the river) on Tues 1st. Last week’s groom is still in good shape. However, the wind has left a fair bit of leaf & stick litter in the tracks. Cottonwood was blown out, seemed like no tracks.
