Birds Hill Park, Saturday morning, -5° to +2°, cloudy.
Skate skiing on the Group Use Road, including the two interior add-on sections (which I had actually written-off two weeks ago).
It was badly rutted down the middle and there were lots of footprints (including a herd of animals), but an icy crust along the sides created very fast skiing and j…[Read more]
Birds Hill Park, Monday norning, -2° to +2°, sun and cloud.
When I arrived at the park and saw a few mm (not cm) of new snow, I knew that skate skiing on the Group Use Road was going to be slower than I anticipated. Initially, the new snow reduced glide only a bit and it may have slightly improved balance and control, but once the snow started t…[Read more]
Thursday morning and early afternoon.
The Group Use Road still has full snow coverage and should still be skate skiable until next week. It`s also still more-or-less flat; the edge lanes are rippled from melting in many places, but it’s not really a big deal. More footprints, but it’s still not a major issue — we’ll see what happens this weekend.…[Read more]
I headed over to my local park at noon with my skating skis.
There’s a ~1K continous loop of crust, so I tried it first. Too soft, as I thought it would be. It had frozen very well overnight, but by noon at -3° and sunny, I was a few hours too late.
So I switched my attention to the good coverage of snow on the storm water retention pond, in…[Read more]
From Ardythe McMaster:
Bittersweet Trails are now closed. The March Sun has won again!
We thanks all those skiers who chose Bittersweet this year, some of them driving considerable distances. Near and far, we loved meeting you all!
We have some ideas for trails improvement for next year. Cookies are guaranteed!
One last thank you, and that is to…[Read more]
Birds Hill Park, Sunday afternoon, -5° to -3°, sunny.
Bluestem, north Chickadee, Esker, Lime Kiln, Aspen.
The tracks were “solid icy” when we started at 1:00 and “soft icy” by the time we finished at 3:30.
Almost totally still clean — a few short areas of debris and a handful of places where dirt was showing.
Most of the track is still f…[Read more]
The track is flat, some light ripply feel on the outer edges… mostly animal tracks on there from skijoring, didn’t see any human footprints…the middle portion from people skiing yesterday didn’t melt so the “v” was frozen in places in the shade… definately fast.. if you have good balance you could really let it rip in there for sure…
Trail Grooming Update: March 21, 2019
Snow conditions are deteriorating with the arrival of spring conditions across the park system. Regular grooming is ending. Ski trails will be fast under cooler temperatures, and soft under midday sun. Expect bare patches and…[Read more]
From David Lumgair:
Lotsa snow at Shannondale.
I groomed Yellow Classic and Green Skate this morn.
Looks like no thawing on Sunday.
I will groom for Sunday skiing! Yahoo!!
I can “Craze the Glaze”, “Bust the Crust”, “Slice the ice”, and “Shift the Drift”.
I made the first Vs on a freshly groomed Group Use Road early on Thursday morning. Incredible conditions my entire time there — until 10:30 AM.
All classic tracks that I crossed (Aspen in 5 places, Chickadee in 2 places) were soft and obviously also freshly groomed.
Tuesday morning, -7° to -2°. Bluestem, Chickadee, Aspen, Esker. All tracks are still perfectly formed, but they are generally icy (very fast), with a few sections of ice and a few sections of “almost icy”. There are also occasional sections that have lots of forest debris. Our skin skis worked perfectly. Blue or Violet klister (“Ice Klister”) w…[Read more]
From David Lumgair on Monday morning:
Good morning ccski folks,
Looks like minus temperature weather over night for this week.
Trails will be fast .
As you know, if it melted the day before, then the glaze of yesterday, on classics, would be very fast.
And If folks were…[Read more]
From Ardythe McMaster:
On Monday morning, some of the classic and skate trails, mostly in the vicinity of the Nordic Centre, were renovated and groomed: for classic North Star, Farm Trail, North Star, Blue’s trail and Caleb’s Way, and for skate Skaters Waltz and Oak Meadow. All are in good to very good condition. Snow on these groomed trails is…[Read more]
From Esther MacKinlay:
I was speaking to Laurie Penton today at Windsor Park. He is looking for a work party to help close down Windsor Park ski for the season. The work party takes place this Thursday, March 21, from 1600-2000 hrs.
Many hands make for light work.
See you there.
From Al Stewart:
I ski skated Falcon Ridge today and all the trails except on High Lake (slush) were in fabulous shape for both skating and classic. If you get a chance to ski there before the melt you will not find a more beautiful and impeccably groomed trail system. And wow is there snow out there!
From David Lungair:
Hello CCSki foks,
2 Skate and 4 Classic Trails will be fresh groomed for Sunday March 17 2019.
Trails are setting up firm and full shape.
Trail head Cabin and The Chalet in the Valley will both be warm.
Come and ski to your heart’s delight .
Or, Just for the health of it !
Friday afternoon, -3°, cloudy.
Skate Ski on the Group Use Road, including the two optional loops.
Very nicely groomed, perfectly firm track, and nice snow consistency, but the track is littered with forest debris in a number of places from yesterday’s strong winds, and the snow is dirty (pine needles) in many places, which makes it slower than…[Read more]
From Corey Mohr:
Excellent spring skiing! I classic skied both Aspen and Bluestem tonight (Thursday) at -3C. Three blow downs of some older poplars were across the trails but you could ski around. With the high winds there is a fair amount of debris, etc. I used skins but could have used a blue or violet hard wax. Nothing is transformed, some…[Read more]
From Ardythe McMaster:
Here at Bittersweet, we received no snowfall from the Thursday storm. Further, the howling winds were unable to blow existing snow around, as the recent mild days have put a hardened layer over the snow-covered fields. The ski trails are fast, but so far, they are not icy. It is well to remember that we are halfway through…[Read more]
Wednesday late morning to early afternoon, -5° to -3°, partly sunny.
The classic tracks were much slicker than yesterday, so we needed one grip wax warmer (-0° to -1°). They will be icy after refreezing … except that they’re forecast to be refreshed with ~5cm of wet snow tonight.
