  • Saturday morning at 9:30, -3°, skate on the Group Use Road.
A herd of deer, a herd of walkers, and a number of skate skiers and skijorers have been on the track at above zero temps since it was groomed on Friday, so it was quite rough. Also, I found it too icy to be fun, so after one lap I switched to skin classic skis.
    The tracks on Chickadee,…[Read more]

    • I used some blue klister this evening and it worked well on uphills. Used silver and blue on Saturday and that was good and didn’t catch debris. The silver klister is amazing stuff and made for dirty conditions near 0 and doesn’t catch any debris Mostly I was poling on the flats. The variable conditions this week were extreme. The crazy…[Read more]

From David Lumgair on Friday afternoon:
    Hello CCSki enthusiasts,
Fresh snow earlier this week, refreshed the trails here.

  • From Joanne Podolchuk, Park District Manager, Birds Hill Provincial Park on Friday afternoon:
All trails will be groomed/track set by the end of Friday.

    • Classic skied Kiln and Esker this afternoon – they were both freshly tracked – with fresh snow, it was slower going!
But they were in great shape
Saw the Chickadee and Bluestem were not done, by the time that I left at 3 pm. Skiers were going, and making their own tracks

  • From Karen Nilsson, President of the Lac du Bonnet Cross Country Ski Club on Monday morning:
We skied yesterday. Trails were surprisingly good yet. Very enjoyable.

  • From Joanne Podolchuk, Park District Manager, Birds Hill Provincial Park on Monday morning:
… car driving on the trail yesterday.  If it was around 4pm, I would encourage Bert to have called Park Patrol at 204-792-1849 (currently David Fang is our winter Park Patrol).  David would like Bert to contact him to gather more information on the incident.

    • I have talked to David about this incident. I don’t know if there were any others who saw this , or have come forward.
It was close to 6PM. Was too far away to get plate#. She probably was unaware of the ski trails and assumed that it was a parking lot exit , then realized later her mistake. Supposed to snow anyway and maybe will get repaired…[Read more]

  • From Joanne Podolchuk, Park District Manager, Birds Hill Provincial Park on Friday afternoon:
The lack of new snow had grooming/track setting stop today, trails are currently in better shape without grooming.  We tried grooming this morning, but the results were worse, so to maintain current conditions the decision was made to stop and revisit on Monday.

From Danielle Dumesnil on Monday evening:
Some trails icy, others in the woods are good as the warm weather stays with us. Don shovelled snow on grassy patches today, especially on Stroll trail and Trailhead crossing.

From Darryl Hrechkosy on Friday morning:
My cousin and I skied Pinawa on February 20/20. The Blue and English Trails could do with a grooming as I found some down hills and turns a bit sketchy, but other than the usual rock showing here and there very little debris in tracks and decent snow coverage. The warming hut there now has wood. The Golf…[Read more]

  • From Darryl Hrechkosy:
Skied all the trails here on February 15. Moderate winds and temperatures around -14 C. Many cars in parking lot. Maple Trail hardly used, tracks decent condition but much debris from heavy winds in tracks. Wild Grape and Elm Trails well used and tracks had the least amount of debris likely owing to it’s popular use.…[Read more]

    From Darryl Hrechkosy:
Skied Sandilands on February 16. Was pleasantly surprised to find the trails recently tracked. Was one of the first skiers on the virgin tracks on the Red and Orange. Perfectly tracked and set up. Tracks slick and fast with very little debris. What a pleasure! There were some brief icy spots on the east Red Loop, but very…[Read more]

  • Early Saturday morning, -6° to -12°.
All trails were groomed yesterday, but the strong wind had blown some snow into classic tracks in a few places, and the corduroy on the Group Use Road was only semi-defined in some places. Worse was the amount of tree debris that had come down, especially on the skate track, which affected glide in many p…[Read more]

    • Hmmm thanks for the report…. was gonna head out, but now thinking I’ll just go check out Windsor since its 2km away vs 35km away…

    • Clarification of “tree debris … affected glide in many places”:
15 KPH glide was slowing to 11/12 KPH glide on maybe 20% of the skate track. Perhaps I should have said “some places”.
A bigger factor is that it was -6° at 7:30 AM, but -12° with a thin layer of fresh snow on top at 9:30 AM.

      • By the time I was ready to go the wind was starting to pick up and the temp dropping more.. decided to ride 100km on the trainer instead… :/

From David Lumgair on Friday evening:
    Hello Skiers,
Most tracks and trails are sheltered from the gentle and medium wind.
    There were a few drifts.
The 2 Skate trails were groomed just before Dark, Feb 14, and the 3 Classic trails will be groomed in early morning.
Skate trails, an easy Green, is beside the well marked  easy Yellow Class…[Read more]

  • 8 Charleswood Ski Club members skied Otter Falls on Sunday. Very good tracks. The snow was generally very good, but Canadian Shield granite is lurking near the snow surface in a few places. Our skis have a couple new very minor scratches. Very enjoyable except …

    • Thanks for the detailed track report, a lot of good info for someone heading out there for a ski.

    • Sloan Cathcart (Head of Interpretation, Manitoba Parks) has looked into my concerns about the trails at Otter Falls. He has told me about solutions that Whiteshell Provincial Park staff will implement:

17 Charleswood Ski Club members skied Shannondale on Saturday, both classic and skate. Great conditions. Ski Day made it a vibrant place to be, as did Boundary Trails Nordic Club’s energetic jackrabbits program, and of course Dave.

  • From Doug on Friday afternoon:
On Wednesday Feb. 5, the trail was in poor condition. The trail is missing in spots, soft in others, and generally blown in with snow.
It does not appear to have been groomed since the initial grooming on the weekend of Jan 25.
