  • Monday afternoon we skied parts of Chickadee, Esker and west Bluestem. Tracks were firm and fast with excellent conditions. Lots of other skiers out enjoying them too. Thanks to BHP staff!

  • From Syd Jones, Birds Hill Park’s Park Operations Supervisor, on Friday afternoon:
The trails have been groomed in Birds Hill Park for the weekend. Hope you have an enjoyable skiing experience, supposed to be a beautiful weekend.

    Groomed today – perfect!
Protected well enough that big south wind had little effect.
    Thanks grooming team

  • Good news for skate skiers. GUR was freshly combed today.
Classic trails? Let’s hope that BHP can freshen them up tomorrow.
Why wait for -25c? Let’s go skiers!

    • On Thursday I heard that the Spruce trail has been freshly combed as well. We skied parts of Bluestem, Chickadee and Esker; and tracks were all in really nice shape with a light dusting of new snow.

  • Another great ski today….just want to thank the Park staff for the beautifully groomed trails!

A post on the A Cross Country Ski Club Facebook group on Saturday says: “BHP GUR skate is in really good condition, a light layer of fresh snow from yesterday morning and a grooming probably done Thursday. The two humps that ran down the the road last week have been groomed out. Flat and smooth now. Except for the vehicle that went down from t…[Read more]

Friday afternoon, Birds Hill Park, -13°, light wind, snow flurries.
Chickadee, Esker, Lime Kiln, west Aspen.
~1 cm of fluffy snow slowed down the tracks a little bit. Conditions were A+, as they have been for the past two weeks. Quite a few people were skiing, including a few families.

From Syd Jones, Birds Hill Park’s Park Operations Supervisor, on Friday afternoon:
The ski trails are groomed and ready. Hope you enjoy the trails in Birds Hill . It is supposed to be another fantastic weekend.

  • We skied Lime Kiln on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the chill, the sun was warm and trail condition was excellent, with many other skiers enjoying it too. FYI – Spruce has been groomed for skate skiing.

I used the group use area for skate skiing. The trail was well-used with good snow coverage. Now I have to work on my technique

  • From Syd Jones, Birds Hill Park’s Park Operations Supervisor, on Friday afternoon:
All ski trails in Birds Hill Park have been groomed and ready for your skiing pleasure.
The team has worked long hours this last week to make this weekend enjoyable.
Please come and enjoy what Birds Hill has to offer.

  • Trails have all been groomed and are in good shape.. GUR is fully groomed for skate skiing.

  • Trails are fine. Lime Kiln has been groomed. Skating path is ungroomed 🙁 . Dont know why this wasnt groomed. If enough skaters would come out and pack the 2-3 inches of snow down , would probably be ok, but not counting on that anymore,as in past seasons. Restaurant was open to public. Only a few skiers out today.

    • Lots of snow this past week, very frigid temps, many windy days => lots of blowing snow => it made sense to wait until Friday to groom for the extra long weekend. With everything else that had to be done in the park on the Friday before an extra long weekend, perhaps there wasn’t enough time, or perhaps it’s unlikely many people would choose to…[Read more]

  • Oh pisten bully, how lovely are thy trails ! Did west bluestem this afternoon and it was very good. The glide was good considering the cold temp..Quite enjoyable ! Merry Christmas to all!

  • As Kevin has reported BHP classic [only] trails were groomed yesterday p.m. Within a few strides you will know that the Pisten Bully is back as well. Deep firm tracks that haven’t deteriorated one bit since they were set. Good glide at -20c and next to nothing for wind.
This is what we’ve been missing!

    • Just want to add to Gary’s report that, contrary to Manitoba Parks website, Blue Stem looks to be track set west of Chickadee, as well, and also I did not see any evidence of grooming on the Group Use Road. Excellent conditions.

  • On Friday afternoon, Manitoba Parks posted on Facebook:
Birds Hill, Beaudry, and Spruce Woods trails are freshly groomed and in excellent condition for the weekend!

  • Bluestem, Chickadee, Aspen and Esker all appeared to be ungroomed.
Bluestem was worst, unstable track, easy to fall off the side. Chickadee was better because of more traffic.
Wondering if BHP will delay track setting until the Pisten Bully is back?

  • So, I arrived at the stables lot at noon Dec 18, and tried the recently groomed trails. It was a good news bad news situation. The good: it was great to ski Aspen in its entirety, there is lots of snow for the Bully to manipulate, the sun was peeking through a slight haze, and the forest looked like a Christmas card with the snow sitting on…[Read more]

  • A lovely ski this afternoon, the trees decorated in snow. I would add that the group use road has been packed (looks like snowmobile tracks) but is likely too lumpy for skate ski. Everyone I chatted with was happy to be out on the trails, groomed or not.

  • From Kathleen Brown, Birds Hill Provincial Park’s Manager, on Friday late afternoon:
The following trails have been groomed: Bluestem to the Chickadee trailhead, Chickadee fully, and Aspen fully.
The Pisten Bully will be picked up next week. It will be back in the park on Wednesday. We are really excited to have it back.
