Was very excited for this first visit (on skis, anyway) to the Squirrel Hills. The trails are great, views were lovely, but conditions were… not ideal. There’s enough but not a ton of snow. The base is pretty hard-packed, and skier-tracked grooves range from shallow to non-existent. Herringboning was very challenging in places; hills ranged from thrilling (slight inclines) to terrifying (everything else). Had a blast careening down the steep and narrow curves of the black trail segments, snowploughing all my wax off, but they’re not exactly approachable under current conditions (and may be icy once temps drop again). With grooming and better snow, these trails would be stellar, but today did not do them justice.
